What are the Type of Sinusitis?

Sinusitis is the infection or inflamation of the sinuses. It often follow on a cold or allergy attack. There are different type of sinusitis which are classifed based on time frame or the type of infection.

Acute sinusitis

It usually stats with an innocuous cold or flu that last more than 10 to 14 days. The symptoms tend to last less than 4 wwks.

Chronic Sinusitis

This are symptoms of sinusitis that last more than 3 months. Often the symptoms are not severe but persistent such as phlegm, cough, blocked nose and facial discomfort.

Recurrent Sinusitis

These individuals have several episodes of sinusitis a year. In between attacks, they are fine and there is no radiological changes of chronic sinusitis. The precipitating cause may be a structural narrowing to the sinuses which will obstruct from swelling cause by allergy and infection leading on to more severe symptoms of sinusitis.

Who are at risk of Sinusitis?

Sinusitis is comon. According to studies, at least 37 million Americans get an episode of sinusitis a year. This is aggravated by

  • Episodes of common cold
  • Nasal obstruction from structural abnormalities
  • Allergies causing mucosa swelling
  • Nasal Polyps
  • Medication that lowers immunity or dries the nasal lining
  • Smoking
